DC DC Converters

DC–DC converters are electronic circuits used to change the voltage level of a direct current voltage source. Due to their wide range of applications, their popularity keeps increas ing on a regular basis. One of the commonly used DC–DC converters is VE-BTZ-CX. It is a mode of H2-H3 topology with functionality based on repeating current spikes that layer upon each other to create an output that is higher than the input voltage. This application field and working principle will be discussed further in this article.

Application Field

VE-BTZ-CX is used in many applications such as providing a constant wattage even at low input voltage, powering high load currents, and boosting up the voltage of a low voltage DC source. The main purpose of this converter is to minimize the need of multiple power supplies by providing power conversion and regulation from a single input source. Also, these converters enable the linear delivery of power for improved performance and efficiency. Working Principle

The VE-BTZ-CX utilizes H2-H3 topology, which is a combination of voltage-fed half-bridge topology and the switched-capacitor topology designed with two-stage power conversion in a boost converter. It includes two switches to control the power flow, a dumping capacitor for maintaining the output voltage to a constant value, a diode to protect from continuous power flow to the battery, and an auxiliary capacitor for maintaining the instantaneous voltage at the output terminals. The main principle of this SDC converter is to convert the low voltage input into a higher voltage by boosting up the current spikes to the output in multiple cycles. The basic operational process of VE-BTZ-CX can be divided into two phases, namely the charging and discharging cycle. Firstly, the charging cycle starts when the switch is ON and the current passes through the dump capacitor. Then, the input current flows to the output via the switch and after that, the switch is turned OFF. This interrupts the current flow and the energy stored in the dump capacitor is released to the output. At this point, the conversion takes place, while the output voltage is built up to its desired level. Secondly, the discharging cycle begins after the switches are turned ON and OFF again. During this period, the dump capacitor is discharged and the switching process is repeated again. This process continues until the output voltage reaches the set point and the voltage waveform contains the desired peaks with no ripples. Overall, VE-BTZ-CX converters offer an efficient, current source, and low cost solutions. They are increasingly becoming popular in many applications due to their wide range of features such as high efficiency, greater power density, and improved thermal capability.
