DC-DC converters are a type of power converter used to step up or step down voltages in a power system. The most common use for these converters is for electronic speed controllers (ESC) which are used in electric aircraft, automobiles and robotic applications. DC-DC converters also find application in renewable energy systems, such as solar and wind energy. VE-JTM-CZ-S (Voltage – Ripple – Jitter – Control & ZVS circuits – Supercapacitor) is a three-stage converter topology, which comprises of a buck-boost switching converter, high frequency transformer, capacitor, inductor and supercapacitor. This topology combines the advantages of a low voltage buck-boost converter with a high frequency transformer with PWM control. The VE-JTM-CZ-S converter has two main stages – a pulse width modulation (PWM) stage and a resonant stage. In the PWM stage, the size of periodic pulses control the output voltage and current. The frequency of these pulses is usually set to the minimum frequency of the load, which is typically in the range of 100 Hz to 40 kHz. These PWM pulses are fed into the input of the resonant stage, which is composed of a high frequency transformer, an inductor, and a capacitor. The transformer is used to isolate the PWM input signal from the resonant circuit, and the inductor and capacitor form a resonant tank circuit.
At the output of the transformer, the resonant tank is tuned to the frequencies at which the circuit operates. The PWM pulses are rectified and smoothed before being fed into the output capacitors. The resonant circuit, in addition to altering the ripple frequency of the output, also performs a Zero Voltage Switching (ZVS) function. This reduces the losses due to switching and improves the efficiency of the converter. The supercapacitor is used to provide energy storage, and to improve the output power factor in applications where the load is varying and unpredictable.
VE-JTM-CZ-S converters are capable of step up, step down, and DC-DC conversion.
