Working principle

The VI-21B-IV is a high-performance, high-frequency monolithic converterbased on current-fed full-bridge topology. It includes an isolated high frequency transformer and high efficiency analog PWM group control technology in a single package. It can provide up to 200W continuous power within the operating temperature range of -25°C to +85°C.

The converter receives high frequency input from a high voltage source, either a battery or an AC input power source, and steps it down to a lower voltage. The high frequency switching is achieved through the use of a high efficiency analog pulse width modulation (PWM) controller. The PWM works by selectively switching the full-bridge branches at the specified frequency, the duty cycle depends on the difference between the setpoint voltage and the actual voltage at the output of the converter. This ensures the constant and precise power delivery throughout the entire operating range. The PWM also has built-in protection features such as over-temperature protection, short-circuit protection, overload protection and current foldback.

A transformer connected to the full-bridge stages provides isolation to other stages in the converter. The transformer’s primary winding receives high frequency input and transforms it to a lower voltage provides isolation to the lower voltage stage. An additional regulation stage is used to adjust the output voltage. Feedback is provided from the output to the regulation stage to enable the converter to maintain precise output voltage.
