DC-to-DC converters are widely used in a variety of applications to provide a regulated power converter source or to bridge the gap between two DC supplies. The VI-26X-CY series of DC-to-DC converters from Vicor Corp. is a high-performance, feature-rich product line that combines the 300V I/O capability of the VI-200 family with the high-efficiency efficiency and low-profile package of the VI-J00 series. This product line is designed to meet the requirements for a variety of applications including photovoltaic (PV) systems, industrial equipment, robotics, power supplies, motor drives, and renewable energy.

The VI-26X-CY series offers a wide range of input voltage and current ratings, simple setup, advanced system monitoring and protection functions, and high efficiency across the full range. These converters are available in two families; the VI-26X-CYA and the VI-26X-CYD. The VI-26X-CY family is designed for point-of-load applications and is capable of delivering up to 200 watts of power from 4.5 to 29.5 VDC input. It is available in a variety of output voltages such as 12 VDC, 24 VDC, 48 VDC or custom. The VI-26X-CYD family is designed for distributed power applications and is capable of delivering up to 500 watts of power from 12 to 48 VDC inputs, and offers custom output voltages up to 500 VDC.

The VI-26X-CY features a four-level architecture with voltage scaling and active current limit. This type of architecture allows the converter to handle wide input voltage range with sustained performance and excellent efficiency. The power stage includes power semiconductor switches, a galvanic transient emission filter as well as EMI and RFI filters to ensure the power converter complies with the applicable EMI standards. The converters also include a digital interface allowing for easy configuration and monitoring via a host computer or terminal.

The VI-26X-CY has high efficiency, wide output voltage adjustment and input protection. The converter features an active power path control circuit with an adjustable turn-on threshold and adjustable switchover point, allowing for optimal load sharing for applications requiring multiple DC-DC converters connected in parallel. When the input voltage drops below the turn-on threshold or the load current exceeds the switchover point, the system will automatically switch to alternate sources as needed. This ensures continuous power supply and prevents equipment shutdown.

The VI-26X-CY is designed with a soft-start and inrush current limiting capability that helps to ensure smooth startup and to reduce the peak current draw from the AC line. This helps reduce power consumption, as well as helping to ensure the safety of the system. The VI-26X-CY also has over-temperature, over-voltage, over-current and reverse input protection features to help protect both the converter and the system.

The VI-26X-CY is an advanced DC-to-DC converter that provides a wide range of features, power level and efficiency for a variety of applications from distributed power systems to point-of-load applications. Its wide input voltage range, adjustable turn-on threshold, adjustable switchover point, active power path control, soft-start, inrush-current limiting and advanced protection features make it an ideal solution for modern applications.
