DC-to-DC converters are power converters that allow direct current (DC) input and output to be transferred to different voltages. They can be used to increase or decrease the voltage of the input power or provide isolation between the inputs and outputs. DC-to-DC converters can also provide power conditioning, regulation, and protection for AC or DC power supplies.The VI-B1K-MV electronically variable DC-to-DC converter is a micro-controller based converter with a wide input range of 8 – 36 Vdc and a regulated output voltage from 1 Vdc to 60 Vdc. This converter is designed to provide a variable output voltage with a precision of ± 0.1 %. It is ideal for applications such as aircraft avionics, laboratory power supplies, and automation and instrumentation systems.The VI-B1K-MV power converter is a two stage device with two main components, a switching regulator and a linear regulator. The switching regulator allows the input voltage to be converted to a low-voltage, high-current output signal. The linear regulator then receives the low voltage signal and further attenuates it to the desired output voltage.The switching regulator works by switching the power devices on and off rapidly, known as Pulse Width Modulation (PWM). This switching modulates the high level of the input voltage to a low level of the desired output voltage. The output of the switching regulator is then regulated with the linear regulator, which finely adjusts and maintains the desired output voltage.The VI-B1K-MV switching regulator includes a low noise AC-DC Power Factor Corrector (PFC) that reduces harmonic content on the input current as well as the input voltage ripple. This reduces the chance of electrical interference and helps the PFC meet international energy efficiency standards.The VI-B1K-MV is designed for high efficiency and excellent line and load regulation. The efficiency of the converter is as high as 91%, and the voltage regulation is very good, with a maximum of ± 0.1 %. The maximum input current is rated at 13 A and the average efficiency can exceed 90 %, depending on the input/output configuration and the operating conditions.The VI-B1K-MV switch mode DC-to-DC converter is thermally protected and rated for full load operation over an extended temperature range. The device can also survive slight overloading (up to 150 %) without failure or damage.The VI-B1K-MV is designed for field applications and is available with a variety of options such as built-in voltage, current, temperature, and power control loops; local user control; programmable alarms and status messages; and integrated safety features. It is RoHS compliant and is suitable for mounting in 19” systems or with user provided mounting hardware. The VI-B1K-MV is designed for applications where a wide input voltage range is required, along with the ability to precisely regulate an output voltage over a large range. Its wide input range, high efficiency, excellent line/load regulation, and user friendly control and communication options make it an ideal choice for applications such as laboratory power supplies, automation and instrumentation systems, and aircraft avionics.
