DC-DC converters are power electronic devices designed to convert a voltage at one level, such as an unregulated battery voltage, to a voltage at another level, such as a regulated voltage for a processor.

VI-B1M-CU is a DC-DC converter developed by Vicor. It converts a wide range of unregulated voltages, from 9V to 36V, into a regulated output of 5 volts. This makes it suitable for applications ranging from cameras, data centers, routers to industrial embedded applications.

The working principle of the VI-B1M-CU starts with a high frequency (500kHz-1.2MHz) DC-DC converter, which is then followed by a secondary DC-DC converter that outputs the required voltage. The primary converter is based on a synchronous buck conversion topology. The synchronous converter comprises two transistors operating in parallel, one N-channel power MOSFET and one Schottky Diode. These components switch on and off at a constant frequency and keep the voltage across the inductor at a fixed level, which ensures that the voltage converted is very stable.

The secondary converter uses OptiMax® technology, which is Vicor\'s patented current/voltage optimization platform. OptiMax® technology uses a simple two-stage voltage conversion method, which increases the efficiency of the power conversion process significantly. The output of the primary converter is coupled to the input of a secondary synchronous converter, which is then followed by a feedback loop that adjusts the current in the secondary buck conversion stage to maintain the desired voltage at the output.
