DC-DC converters take a source of direct current (DC) power and convert it to a different DC voltage level, usually with an associated change in current capacity. The VI-BTK-IX-B1 series of DC-DC converters are designed to convert from a wide range of input voltages to a single output voltage. They offer high efficiency, overload protection, low noise operation, wide temperature operating range, and are available in a range of package sizes.
The VI-BTK-IX-B1 series of DC-DC converters are designed for a range of application fields and work on multiple principles. Examples of their application fields include:
- Industrial control and process automation
- Telecommunications and networking
- Portable and battery operated electronics
- Solar energy conversion
- Automotive, bus, and railway systems
The VI-BTK-IX-B1 converters are capable of operating on several principles which are based on the operational needs of the target application field. For industrial control and process automation, as well as many other applications, a step-down converter is often the most suitable option. There are different types of step-down converters including the voltage mode (VM), current mode (CM), and pulse-width modulation (PWM) converters. The type of step-down converter used in the VI-BTK-IX-B1 series is the typical voltage mode converter which includes all of the features necessary for reliable and efficient operation.
The primary function of the step-down converter is to reduce the input voltage to the desired output voltage. The VM converter used in the VI-BTK-IX-B1 series works by using a transformer to step down the input voltage, and then a switch is used to control the amount of current flowing through the transformer. When the switch is turned on, current flows and the output voltage is generated. When the switch is turned off, no current flows and the output voltage is zero. This process is repeated with a pulse frequency of several hundred thousand times per second (kHz), which ensures an efficient and stable output voltage.
To ensure the efficiency of the step-down converter, various protection measures are implemented in the VI-BTK-IX-B1 series. The most important of these is over-temperature protection, which prevents damage to the converter in case it overheats. Overcurrent protection is also implemented to prevent excessive current flow, and input voltage protection is also included to prevent input voltages that are outside of the design range. All of these protection measures are designed to ensure safe and reliable operation of the VI-BTK-IX-B1 series of converters.
