Fairchild’s VI-J01-IY is a low-cost DC-DC converter which is ideal for isolated and single-supply applications. This product line is popular in automotive, industrial, lighting, audio and power supply applications. The VI-J01-IY provides high and low density conversion, high efficiency and a wide input voltage range. The VI-J01-IY series is available with both fixed and adjustable output voltage options.The VI-J01-IY is a synchronous bucktopology converter with low output ripple voltage and high efficiency. The device is also rated to withstand reverse conduction, making it ideal for single-ended input applications. The VI-J01-IY utilizes a switching frequency of up to 1.2MHz to afford an ultra-compact solution.The main component of the VI-J01-IY converter is the power electronic switch. This switch is responsible for regulating the output voltage and the current delivered to the load. The switch consists of a high power metal-oxide semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) and an integrated control circuit. The switching frequency of the device can be adjusted to optimize efficiency and ripple noise.The VI-J01-IY operates on a pulse width modulation technique. During each cycle, the MOSFET is turned on and off at a certain frequency. When the MOSFET is “on”, the output current from the converter builds up to a steady-state value determined by the control circuit. When the MOSFET is “off”, the existing output current is discharged through an inductor. The switcher then resumes with the next pulse to build up the output current again.To regulate the output voltage, the MOSFET opens and closes the power switch with a constant frequency. This causes the output voltage to fluctuate with the on and off time. The control circuit measures the output voltage and adjusts the on and off times of the MOSFET accordingly. This allows the output voltage to remain closely regulated across a wide input voltage range.The VI-J01-IY also features low switching noise and a high efficiency rating. The device integrates an output voltage spread of 20ns to minimize the switching noise. Additionally, the design of the device features a maximum duty cycle of 95% for high efficiency. The device is capable of converting an input voltage range of 3.5V to 13.8V and provides output voltages of 5V, 12V and 24V.The VI-J01-IY is highly reliable and robust. The device is designed to withstand high temperature and transient conditions with superior accuracy and stability. All components are housed in a surface-mount package that is rated to withstand intermittent surges of up to 150V and operate in a temperature range of -40°C to +85°C.The VI-J01-IY offers users a low-cost, high performance DC-DC converter.
