DC DC Converters
DC DC converters are electronic circuits used to convert one type of DC voltage to another. This conversion of voltage can be of very low (also referred to as small-signal) levels, such as converting 12V into 5V, or high levels, such as converting 48V into 12V. They are also able to convert an AC voltage into a DC voltage.
The VI-J3J-EW is an example of a DC DC converter, and is used to convert a wide range of inputs into 3.3V, 5V, and 12V outputs. Depending on the variant chosen, the input ranges are from 4.5-10V, 10-18V, 16-32V, 24-48V, or 24-60V. The output current ranges from 15A to 60A (Total) and up to 30A for each output (3.3V, 5V, or 12V).
The VI-J3J-EW consists of 3 main parts – input filtering, power stage, and output filtering. The input filtering is in place to protect the converters from high voltages by limiting input spikes. The power stage takes the input and creates low-frequency (switching) pulses, with the length of the pulses determined by the predetermined output voltages. Finally, the output filtering is used to filter the output from the power stage and reduce the harmonics from the low-frequency signal.
The VI-J3J-EW works by using a high-frequency switching power stage, which takes a high-voltage input (4.5-60V depending on the variant) and using the length of the switch pulses to generate the desired output voltage (3.3V, 5V, 12V). The power stage consists of an inductor, a diode, and two transistors (an N-channel FET and a P-channel MOSFET). The inductor stores energy in the form of a magnetic field as the input voltage is applied across it. When the FET is switched on, the current in the inductor increases and the magnetic field is built up, and when it is switched off, the inductor dissipates the energy in the form of current in the load.
The diode in the power stage ensures that the current only flows in one direction, and the two transistors are connected in a “push-pull” configuration. This means that while the FET is switched on (pulling the voltage “down”), the MOSFET is switched off (allowing the voltage to go back “up”). This push-pull configuration ensures that the voltage waveform is kept constant, allowing a constant output voltage. The length of the high-frequency pulses is determined by the voltage feedback from the output. This allows the VI-J3J-EW to maintain a constant output voltage despite variations in the input voltage.
The VI-J3J-EW is designed for high-efficiency and low-cost applications. It has an input/output (I/O) ratio of 92% and a minimum temperature rise of 10ºC to ensure it operates at peak performance, even in demanding applications.
