Working principle
A laser diode is quite similar to other semiconductor devices, such as p-n junction diodes or transistors. The chip of a laser diode is made of semiconductor material which isdoped with impurities in such a way that it forms a p-n junction. The results of the impurity doping is that there are pairs of electron-hole within the device, and when these electrons and holes recombine, they will transform energy into photons of laser beam.
The working principle of a laser diode is quite simple and easy to understand. The operation of a laser diode device is based on the application of DC electrical current through the chip. This current will then induce a currentin the junction, and when it reaches the threshold value, the current will exchange from one side of the diode’s junction to the other side.When this current exchange takes place, the electrical energy is released in the form of laser beam or photon.
It is essential to point out that the quantum efficiency of a laser diode might be varied by changing its electrical power supply. For example, when the energy supply of the diode in the photoelectric effect region is removed, then the efficiency of the laser diode will decrease. On the other hand, increasing the energy supply would lead to the increase of the quantum efficiency of the diode.
