Thyristors - SCRs - Modules

A Thyristor is an electrically controlled, semiconductor switching device composed of four alternating layers of n-type and p-type materials. SCRs are a special type of Thyristor with higher voltage, current, and power ratings, and can be used in many different applications. The VS-VSKU71/10 is a 10 Amp module capable of withstanding up to 800V continuous and 800V peak pulse voltage.

Application Field

The VS-VSKU71/10 can be used in various circuits, including voltage regulation and AC, DC and pulse switching, for industrial, automotive, and aerospace applications. It can be used for motor control, battery charging, speed control, and soft start, as well as power switches for lighting, energy saving, and other industrial applications.

The module can also be used in power electronics and communication equipment such as UPS, inverters, and telecommunication systems.

Working Principle

The VS-VSKU71/10 operates by utilizing the flow of electrons in and out of a junction. A circuit can be set up in which the flow of electron through the negative side of the junction causes the electrons to become trapped and the device to switch on. This can be done by increasing the voltage across the junction.

The junction contact contains four layers of p-type and n-type materials. When a negative pulse is applied to the anode, the electrons, which have been injected by the voltage pulse, are injected into the p-type material and then trapped by the pinched off region. This causes the electron current to flow through the SCR, switching it on. If the anode gets a positive pulse, the trapped electrons are pushed out of the pinched off region and the device switches off.

The SCR can be switched on and off several times by changing the voltage polarity across the anode and cathode. The device will stay on in the current mode even if the control voltage is removed.

The VS-VSKU71/10 is designed for AC and DC reactive and resistive loads. It has a high current rating of 10 amps, low forward voltage drop, low power dissipation, and high switching speed. Furthermore, it is capable of withstanding high surge and transient voltage and protects against thermal runaway.

The device is also equipped with an over-temperature protection feature which ensures safe operation of the device. Additionally, the VS-VSKU71/10 is equipped with a protective guard ring to prevent the accidental contact with live components. The IN leg of the module is used to control the device, while the AN leg is connected to the anode.

The VS-VSKU71/10 is suitable for use in a variety of applications, providing reliable and stable performance. It has a high input current capability and active clamping, which minimizes residual charges after the switch-off operation. It has a low voltage pickup of 500V on average and is capable of withstanding up to 800V continuous and 800V peak pulse voltage.
