The ZL30255LFG7 is a multi-channel programmable clock generator from Zilog. With features such as multi-channel programmable frequency, frequency synthesis, programmable high or low output count start, low jitter and low power consumption. It is a highly flexible, low-stakes clock solution for a wide variety of applications. The device is suitable for high frequency precision timing applications such as network and telecom equipment, communications, industrial and medical instrumentation, as well as for general purpose synchronization.

The ZL30255LFG7 device operates on a wide power supply range from 2.3 V to 3.3 V and produces four time-to-digital synchronizable output clocks. The device can be easily programmed via a user-friendly set of control bits either through I2C, SPI or through a parallel micro-controller interface. The device can program output frequency in 10 KHz resolution and up to 4GHz accuracy. At 3.3 V supply, output jitter can be as low as 0.1 ps.

The operating principle of the ZL30255LFG7 is based on charge pump phase locked loop (PLL) design. The output clock is locked to an external or internal reference clock. The phase-locked loop (PLL) uses a charge pump to generate the feedback signal. The charge pump compares the phase and frequency of the PLL depending on the input clock.
