Evaluation boards are test platforms commonly used by engineers while designing or testing electronics systems. Evaluation boards, and more specifically Linear Voltage Regulators, provide engineers a safe and relatively easy means to test out the performance of electronic systems as well as circuit topologies. Linear voltage regulators, and the LP2996MREVAL portion of evaluation boards, provide an ultra-low dropout voltage and an extremely low quiescent current allowing engineers to achieve a high efficiency output power from a variety of sources.
The LP2996MREVAL includes a low dropout three terminal voltage regulated linear regulator. It is available in a fixed output voltage version (2.5 V, 3.3 V, 5 V) and it can also be adjusted to any voltage in between the above-mentioned values. This evaluation board supports a wide variety of applications such as mobile phone chargers, digital TVs, home audio systems, gaming systems, etc.
The working principle of the LP2996MREVAL is based on the voltage regulator’s internal conductive medium made up of MOSFET transistors, capacitors, resistors and a low dropout control element. This medium takes advantage of the input voltage and regulates it to create a stable output voltage. It works by monitoring the difference between the desired output voltage and the actual output voltage. If the difference between the two is too large, the MOSFET transistors increase or decrease their resistance depending on the situation, allowing or preventing the current to flow.
The MOSFET transistors have two characteristics that can be adjusted - gate voltage and gate length. Gate length is the distance between the source and drain of the MOSFET transistor, and gate voltage is responsible for controlling the drain current. Gate voltage is adjusted by the low dropout control element. When the output voltage is higher than the desired voltage, the low dropout control element decreases the drain current, reducing the output voltage. Conversely, when the output voltage is lower than the desired level, the low dropout control element increases the drain current, resulting in the output being raised.
Furthermore, the LP2996MREVAL also offers several features which tackle the issue of transient response, such as current limiting, thermal shutdown, and output voltage protection. Current limiting helps prevent against the output voltage from dropping significantly if a sudden surge of current is detected, while thermal shutdown prevents the voltage regulator from operating outside its specified temperature window. Finally, the output voltage protection feature protects the voltage regulator from sudden voltage transients, ensuring the output voltage remains close to the desired setting.
