004119200 Electrical Fuses: Application Field and Working Principle
Electrical fuses are used to protect against over current (overload or current leakage) and short circuit conditions. An electrical fuse consists of a metal strip, or fuse element, which melts when the current flowing through it exceeds a certain level, thus breaking the circuit in which it is connected. This helps to prevent further damage due to overheating, fire, or electrical shock. Electrical fuses are used in all types of electrical circuits, including house wiring, auto circuits, electronics, and telecommunication networks.
Types of Electrical Fuses
There are three main types of electrical fuses: time delay fuses, semiconductor fuses, and resettable fuses.
- Time delay fuses: These fuses offer protection against current overloading and short circuit conditions. A time delay fuse has a small amount of self-insulation in the metal strip, which delays its melting time. As a result, it can absorb some of the current surge when switching on high power devices. With passage of time, the wire and insulation become thinner, resulting in a decrease in the current-carrying capacity of the fuse element.
- Semiconductor fuses: These fuses use the electrical resistance of semiconductors (such as diodes, transistors, etc.) to protect against electrical overload and short circuit conditions. These fuses are much faster in operation compared to time delay fuses, and their response time is within milliseconds. They are also capable of withstanding high voltage and current surges.
- Resettable fuses: These fuses are made of a metal strip with a special coating that melts when the current flowing through it exceeds the rated value. When the current decreases, the fuse element cools off and re-establishes the electrical connection.
Working Principle
The working principle of an electrical fuse is based on the material used in its construction. When there is an overload or short circuit, the small metal strip inside the fuse heats up and melts. This results in a break in the circuit and prevents damage due to the excessive current flow. The fuse is designed in such a way that it is able to withstand a certain amount of current before melting. After it melts, the circuit is permanently broken and the fuse needs to be replaced.
Applications
Electrical fuses are commonly found in both residential and commercial electrical systems. They are used to protect a variety of electrical systems, ranging from home wiring, cars, and electronics to large-scale industrial power systems. They are also used in medical equipment, electrical appliances, and all types of electronic devices. These fuses are available in different sizes and ratings, and can handle anything from a few milliamps to hundreds of kiloamps.
In addition to the basic protective function, some fuses are also designed to cut off the flow of electrical current in the event of a fire. This safety feature can be found in many residential electrical circuits, as well as in hazardous environment application such as explosive atmospheres.
Overall, electrical fuses are essential components for any electrical system, helping to protect against dangerous over current conditions and guarding the system against fire and electric shock.
