Flat Flex, Ribbon Jumper Cables – Application Field and Working Principle

Flat flex cables and ribbon jumper cables, also known as flexible flat cables or FFCs, are multi‐conductor cables with an extremely small form factor. The flat flex cables allow high-density wiring as components can be placed in very tight spaces without stressing the cable. This feature makes them an ideal product for internal wiring applications within the electronics industry. The flexible flat cables are also used extensively for applications such as factory automation, medical equipment, commercial machinery, transportation, and consumer electronics.The flat flex cables are constructed with a flexible plastic or metal support material that is rated to withstand a few hundred thousands of flexes at minimal force. The support material is typically surrounded by a colorful polyester film and a sheath of conductive wire-mesh which together mechanically protect the conductors within while also providing some electrical shielding.
