Flat Flex Cables

Flat flex cables, also known as ribbon cable or multi-wire planar cable, are composed of multiple insulated conductors laid parallel to each other, held together by a flat flexible material such as Mylar or other plastic. The flexibility of these type of cables makes them suitable for a wide array of applications, including automotive, military, aerospace, consumer electronics, and many others. Furthermore, they are often used in cases where there is little or no space for installation, as the cables can be folded and packed together.Flat flex cables typically come in two different types of packaging; jackets and tapes. Jacketed cables consist of a thin metal sleeve that protects the integrity of the conductor wires, before they are wound and inserted into the sleeve. On the other hand, taping involves cutting out pieces of insulation to wrap around the conductor wiresand securing them with adhesive.

Depending on the application, flat flex cables can be manufactured with various conductor counts, designs, colors, voltage and amperage ratings, and other features. Some of the most common designs include the twisted pair ribbon, signal-pair ribbon, and double-shielded ribbon cables. The most popular type of cable material used in the manufacture of flat flex cables is typically copper, although there are also some types of aluminum and other metals used.

In terms of their working principle, flat flex cables use induction to carry electrical information from one point to another. Induction is a phenomenon where a magnetic field is created and the magnetic field induces an electric current in a conductor. This property makes them particularly well-suited for transmitting data or other electrical signals from one point to another without the need for physical connection or even direct contact. As such, they are often used to connect Electronics, computers, and other machines.

Ribbon Jumpers

Ribbon jumpers are a type of fiber-optic cable that combines twisted pair and singlemode fiber-optic technologies in a very small package. It combines the transmission speed of twisted pair copper wires with the extended range and low latency of singlemode fiber-optic cables. This combination gives ribbon jumpers the ability to carry higher data rates over long distances than any other type of cable.

Ribbon jumper cables are generally composed of a ribbon containing eight fibers that are connected to a connecting matrix. The connecting matrices are designed to support multiple data transmission systems such as Ethernet, Fiber Channel, and InfiniBand. Each individual fiber contains one of the eight cores that make up the ribbon, which allows the cable to interconnect different devices.

The working principle of ribbon jumpers is similar to that of flat flex cables. When electric current flows through the cable, the alternating current creates a magnetic field around the cable. This in turn induces an electric current in the secondary wires connected to the ribbon jumper cable, thus carrying electrical information from one point to another.

Conclusion

Flat flex cables and ribbon jumpers are two of the most common types of cables used in a variety of applications. Both have their own advantages and disadvantages, but they are generally best suited for applications where space is limited and speed is essential.

Flat flex cables are particularly well-suited for applications that require high flexibility and compact design, while ribbon jumpers are better for long distance applications with a higher data transmission rate. Both work through an induction principle to carry electrical information from one point to another, but differ in their material composition and design.
