Flat Flex

This type of cable is designed for applications that require a flat, flexible profile for increased route-ability. Flat flex cables are commonly found in applications ranging from medical devices, robots, commercial LED lighting systems to motorized instruments. The flat flex cable design and construction typically includes a number of thin conductive adhesive layers between layers of a conductive ribbon-like material, which is commonly referred to as zebra ribbons. Although flat flex cables are highly flexible, they can also be molded for strength and stability when used in harsh environments.

Flat flex cables are relatively easy to install and maintain. They are designed for quick connection and disconnection, eliminating the need for soldering. It also makes them suitable for applications that require frequent system reconfiguring or modification. These cables are available in a variety of sizes and colors for increased visibility in various applications. Additionally, flat flex cables are resistant to moisture and corrosion since they are designed with an outer shielding material, which provides further protection against electrical interference.

Ribbon Jumper Cables

Ribbon jumper cables are flexible, multi-conductor electrical cables with a flat, ribbon-like design. These cables are used to transmit electronic signals and power between computers, telecommunications equipment, and electrical components in a variety of settings. With their flat shape, these cables feature enhanced flexibility, easy routing, and improved airflow for increased cooling of the internal components. Ribbon jumper cables are generally divided into two types: shielded and unshielded. The shielded type is typically used in high-noise and high-temperature applications, as it offers improved protection against signal interference. Additionally, shielded ribbon jumper cables can be used to ground the equipment and reduce the risk of electrostatic discharge. Unshielded cables, on the other hand, are used in applications that require flexibility and a cost-efficient solution. Ribbon jumper cables are generally produced using a single strip of flat, insulated conductor material. The conductor material can come with a variety of insulation types to suit various applications. Additionally, ribbon cables may also come with reinforcing materials such as textile braid for increased resistance against frequent flexing, and dielectric insulation for enhanced protection against electrically induced noise. Furthermore, these cables offer a compact and cost-effective solution for signal and power transferring.

Working Principle

Flat flex and ribbon jumper cables function in essentially the same way. The conducting material used in both types of cables act as conductors, providing an unobstructed path for electrical flow between points. This type of material is typically insulated for added safety and requires connection via a crimping, soldering, interface connector, or wire splice. It is also important to consider the type of connecting material to be used when installing a flat flex or ribbon cable. Using the wrong type of connecting material can cause failure or short circuit issues in the cables. Furthermore, the flat flex and ribbon cables have an outer layer of insulation, which shields them from external electric fields and interference. Additionally, when ribbon cables are soldered for connection, the insulation material also serves the purpose of preventing electrical shorts. This insulation layer also provides physical and mechanical protection. These cables can be bent and flexed up to a certain point without experiencing a degradation in performance, making them a great asset in a wide variety of applications.
