Flat Flex Cable
A Flat Flex cable, commonly referred to as a FFC cable, is a flexible, narrow, printed circuit made with flat conductors as opposed to round conductors. The conductors are insulated from each other and are typically arranged in single, double, or multiple layers. The FFCs are commonly available in lengths of 3" to 15" and in widths of 0.16" to 0.64". FFCs are frequently used to interconnect PC boards, peripherals, and in other applications.
The Flat Flex cable is especially useful in board-to-board or device-to-device connection applications. It is ideal for connecting large amounts of data, providing retention time for correct connection, and allowing heavy current flow. FFCs are used in a variety of applications, including automotive, medical, and industrial machines, and consumer electronics. FFCs are also useful because of their ability to bend and flex given the conditions.
Working Principle
The Flat Flex cable works by having each conductor separated from each other by an insulating layer. The conductors are typically arranged in single, double, or multiple layers. The layers are sandwiched between two copper-clad layers to form a flexible printed circuit. The conductor is covered with a dielectric material that acts as an insulator, and the conductors are arranged in a spiral pattern. As current passes through the conductor, electromagnetic forces cause the sides of the conductor to vibrate, creating an electrical field between the conductors and the dielectric material.
The Flat Flex cable has several advantages. It is light, flexible, and can easily be bent or twisted into custom configurations. This means that it is suitable for applications in tight spaces or areas that are difficult to access. It also has a high current capacity, meaning it can handle high current applications without deforming or shortening. Additionally, it can be easily customized to fit specific applications.
Ribbon Jumper Cables
A Ribbon Jumper Cable, or RJC, is an insulated flat cable that connects two or more components or circuits together. It is typically constructed of flexible, thin, insulated copper wires that have a conductor strip at each end for the purpose of making connection easier and faster. RJC cables come in a wide range of sizes, shapes, colors, and connectors; and can be used in various applications, including computer systems, telecommunications, automotive, and medical systems.
RJCs are commonly used for short-distance connections, such as in-rack or cable harnessing applications. The wires are arranged in a flat configuration, allowing for less clutter at the connection points. RJCs are usually shielded for improved EMI and RFI immunity and can be made into waterproof and flame-retardant versions for enhanced safety. The conductors are insulated with PVC or other materials for increased durability and flexibility.
Working Principle
Ribbon Jumper cables work by having the wires arranged in a flat configuration. This allows for easier connection and less clutter at the connection points. The wires are laced through the connectors, which are then crimped at the ends. This holds the wires securely and creates a reliable connection. When current passes through the Ribbon Jumper cable, the conductors vibrate, creating an electrical field between the conductors and the dielectric material. This field allows the flow of electricity from one point to the other.
RJCs are an excellent choice for short-distance, low-current connections. They offer flexibility in regards to custom configuration and configuration changes. Additionally, they are often more cost-effective than other types of cables, since they typically require fewer components and connectors.
