Terminal blocks, also referred to as barrier blocks, are an integral part of industrial automation systems. These assemblies serve as the key interface for connecting the various elements of electrical circuitry within complex equipment. As one of the oldest types of field wiring systems, terminal blocks are designed to meet the requirements of harsh industrial and commercial environments.Terminal blocks, as with other types of electrical components, can be tailored to the needs of the application. From customization to specific technical requirements, the technology behind these devices continues to evolve. Nevertheless, some of the core principles underlying the design of barrier blocks remain unchanged.The definition of terminal blocks can vary from one manufacturer to the next, but in general, they are a standard, modularized wiring system. Each terminal block consists of a number of components (Terminal pins, Identification tags, Bridge bars, Connectors) that allow the connection of wires to the equipment\'s internal control system.For a terminal block to function properly, it must first contain two necessary elements: a ground wire and an input connection. The ground wire is a single-core wire that allows the terminal block to discharge static electricity, whereas the input connection contains a galvanized conductor that connects the terminal block to the system\'s circuit board.The physical appearance of the terminal blocks will vary according to application, but the most conventional type features two mortar-plated terminals that are securely positioned parallel to each other. The two terminals are then connected by a pass-through bridge bar, which allows two wires to be connected easily as a single unit.In addition to the components of the terminal block itself, additional components are required for the specific application. For instance, in many instances, these blocks are used in conjunction with a pre-terminated end-to-end connection or plug-and-play hardware.The working principle of terminal blocks can be described as follows: electricity is conducted from the electrical source, through the circuit board, to the terminal block and finally through the wire (depending on the application). If the block is connected to the system\'s input connection, then it will function as a direct line from the source to the associated device. If, on the other hand, the block is being used to connect wires in series, then it will act as a switch.In terms of applications, terminal blocks can be used almost anywhere that requires electrical power. These wiring systems are particularly useful for industrial controls and robotics-related devices. Control systems, such as those found in industrial automation systems, will often use terminal blocks as the main connection conduit for both inter-system wiring and for connecting the various elements of the machine to the ground, supply voltage, and/or I/O circuits.Terminal blocks are also used in non-industrial applications, such as radios and other audio and video devices. For these purposes, the blocks are usually either inserted or soldered directly onto the circuit board.
