Flat Flexible Connectors (FFCs) and Flexible Printed Circuit (FPC) connectors are electrical connectors that are often used in a variety of applications. FFCs and FPCs are commonly used to interconnect components in circuit boards, computers, phones, audio/video equipment, and a wide range of other electronic products. The primary differences between FFCs and FPCs lie in the several construction techniques and number of contacts.
An FFC is constructed of flat copper wires that are connected together with metal sliders and plastic insulators. These wires are usually molded into a cable to provide structural strength and protection from the elements. The primary function of the FFC is to provide a mechanical connection between two electrical components. This is done by inserting the open end of the FFC into the corresponding connector on the PCB. Once the FFC is plugged in, the electrical contacts on the FFC and the correspondent on the connector are electrically connected.
A FPC is generally constructed of a single sheet of plastic that acts as an insulator along with several layers of conductive copper. A FPC connects two separate circuit boards or components together. The FPC consists of two flexible layers; the top layer is the flexible substrate and the bottom layer is a conductive copper foil. The substrate is often composed of nylon, glass-filled polyester, or paper. The copper foil is embedded into the substrate and is capable of carrying electrical signals between the two electrical components or circuit boards.
FFC and FPC connectors are typically used to connect two different electronic components such as a display controller, signal mixer, or audio amplifier. They are also used to connect multiple Data I/O ports of a single circuit board. Many consumer electronics use FFC and FPC connectors in their construction, including cameras, camcorders, cell phones, portable gaming devices, and video game consoles.
The primary differences between FFCs and FPCs lie in the several construction techniques and number of contacts. FFCs come with 1 to 160 contacts while FPCs come with 1 to 256 contacts. FFCs are capable of carrying signals up to 1 amp with a maximum voltage of 3V, while FPCs are capable of carrying signals up to 3 amps with a maximum voltage of 32V.
In summary, FFC and FPC connectors are used in a variety of applications to connect two separate electrical components or circuit boards. FFCs consist of flat copper wires and plastic insulators while FPCs consist of a single sheet of plastic with a conductive copper foil embedded inside. The main difference between FFCs and FPCs lies in the number of contacts and the construction techniques used. FFCs and FPCs are commonly used in consumer electronics, computers, phones, and a wide variety of other electronic products.
