When the current is changed, the current flows in the opposite direction and de-magnetizes the ferromagnetic core, generating a reverse magnetic field. This action is called back EMF. The inductance of the fixed transformer is related to the hysteresis magnetic characteristics of the core material, and the air gap affects the inductance which can enable many kinds of inductance values to be achieved.
