Application Field

Rectangular connectors have a long history in the electronics industry. From the beginning of the 20th century, the use of rectangular connectors has been broadening and continues to do so today. Originally used for the transmission of audio signals, connectors have become important in the manufacture of PCBs (Printed Circuit Boards). Present-day applications of rectangular connectors include a wide range of electronics applications such as consumer electronics, defense systems, and automotive products.

Rectangular connectors are typically used in applications where very high current transmission is required and where direct contact with other conductors present is unlikely. Since these connectors are designed to mate with the printed circuit board, they are ideal for making connections between circuit boards, wires, and hardware. Additionally, they can be used to make connections between larger cables, such as external power supplies and battery connections. Rectangular connectors are also used extensively in computer peripheral connections, such as disk drives, keyboards, and mouse connections.

Working Principle

The design of a rectangular connector is simple, consisting of two metal layers with a plastic layer sandwiched between them. When making a connection, the metal layers are pressed together, making an electrical connection. A contact is made when the metal layers are pushed together, and the resulting electrical path connects the two circuits. The contact is usually arranged in a way that minimizes the contact pressure, allowing for a more reliable connection.

One of the most important features of a rectangular connector is its pinning system. Each connector will contain a set of pins that make contact with the contact pads on the PCB. The pins are generally arranged in a pattern so that when inserted into the connector, they make contact with the contact pads on the board. This ensures that a reliable connection is made and that the voltage and current flow is stable.

When it comes to temperature variation, rectangular connectors are well suited for hot and cold applications. The plastic layer between the two metal layers provides insulation that helps to reduce temperature fluctuations. This ensures that any temperature variations do not cause the connector to malfunction.
