Terminals - PC Pin Receptacles, Socket Connectors
Pin receptacles, also known as socket connectors, are a type of terminal and are used in some devices in order to make electrical contact between two or more connecting devices.
Application Field
Pin receptacles are typically used in module-type products, such as computers, telecommunications, consumer electronics, telecommunication switches, and industrial instrumentation. Common types of connectors used with these receptacles are the spring-loaded pin connectors, quick-connect and separable varieties.
They are also used in the construction of illuminated signs and outdoor lighting fixtures, since they provide for a more secure way to attach the wiring and electrical components to the panel or base instead of screwing or soldering them in place. This makes for a much neater install and also helps reduce the risk of sparking when working with high voltage applications.
Pin receptacles are also often used in consumer electronics, such as mobile phones and digital cameras. Most pin receptacles used in these devices feature a snap-on lock mechanism, to ensure a secure connection and prevent accidental unplugging of the device.
Working Principle
Pin receptacles consist of an insulating body, a contact metallic body and a cover. The body and contact piece are usually made from either copper alloy or stainless steel. The contact body houses several spring-loaded pins, which can be pushed up and down to contact the outside body. When two pin receptacles are mated, the pins in the second receptacle press against the pins in the first, creating a secure electrical connection.
When a second receptacle is mated with a first, the pins are pushed in the second receptacle, compressing the formers\' springs. This causes a dimple to appear in the contact piece in the first receptacle, creating a proper seal between the two components. This prevents any dust or foreign particles from entering the connection and interfering with the electrical current.
Once mated, it usually requires either a special tool or a large amount of force to un-mate the two components. This provides customers with peace of mind, knowing that their device is not going to become accidentally disconnected.
Pin receptacles are a handy and secure type of connector, and are commonly used in a wide variety of applications. They provide a secure connection, prevent accidental disconnection, and are relatively easy to install and use. With their wide range of applications, it is easy to see why pin receptacles are such a popular choice for many electrical devices.
