FFC, FPC (Flat Flexible) Connectors
Flat Flexible Connectors (FFCs) are a type of electrical connector used for connecting a variety of electronic components, including integrated circuits, transistors, resistors, LEDs and other components. FFCs are used in a variety of applications including automotive, consumer electronics, medical devices, telecommunication, audio, video, defense, space and more.
FFCs are made up of two or more flat flexible circuits, each composed of a flexible flat substrate containing a number of electrical conductors. Each of these flexible circuits is connected to an individual component or group of components via an integrated connector. The integrated connectors are typically formed from a bent metal strip, which is then attached to the flexible substrate along with a variety of electrical contacts. The bend in the metal strip allows the FFC to bend and flex in various directions for ease of installation and connection. FFCs also usually feature an environmental seal to protect against dust, moisture and other corrosive elements.
The main advantage of FFCs is their ability to move with the components they are connecting in a safe and reliable manner. FFC connections reduce the weight and size of the system or product, and can also reduce the number of components needed for a given application. This makes FFCs ideal for applications where space, weight, and complexity are critical, such as portable and handheld devices. FFCs also offer faster and easier assembly times because the FFC can be quickly dropped into place and connected without the need for soldering.
In terms of working principle, FFCs operate using a combination of contact springs and conductive surfaces to provide electrical continuity. The connector contacts are designed to ensure low contact resistance and reactive inductance. The contact resistance between two FFCs can be much lower than with other connection methods, such as solder joints or through-hole pins. Both contact surfaces and springs are important for reliable connections.
FFCs are available in a variety of standard sizes, shapes, and colors, and can also be customized to fit specific size and shape requirements. They are typically used for connecting printed circuit boards to one another, for connecting multiple components together on a printed circuit board, and for extending the wiring on a board for maximum flexibility. FFCs are also used in a variety of industrial applications, including automotive, medical, consumer electronics, and military and aerospace.
FFCs offer many advantages over other connection methods, such as low contact resistance, flexible design, reliability, and ease of installation. FFCs can also be used to connect a variety of components in a variety of configurations, offering a wide range of options for configuring an electronic system. In many cases, FFCs can replace other connection methods, reducing the complexity, cost, and size of an electronic system or product.
