Incandescents
An incandescent lamp is a device which generates light by heating a filament wire to a very high temperature until it glows. The heat is generated by passing an electric current through the filament. Incandescent lamps are the oldest and most common type of electric lighting and by far the most widely used in everyday life. They are inexpensive and easy to maintain, and have a long lifetime. They are also relatively reliable and durable compared to other types of lighting.
Incandescent lamps are capable of producing a wide variety of colors, depending on the material used to construct the filament and the surrounding atmosphere. Generally, the higher the temperature of the filament, the more intense the color of light produced. The most common filament material is tungsten, which can produce a variety of color temperatures including cool, neutral, and warm.
Neons
Neon lamps, also known as gas-filled tubes, are electric lights which contain gas in a glass tube. When electricity is passed through the tube, the gas emits a bright light. The type of gas used to produce the light will determine the color of the light emitted. Neon lamps are most commonly used for signs and displays, such as those found in restaurants and bars.
Neon lamps work on the principle of gas discharge. When electricity is passed through the gas, electrons collide with the atoms of the gas, releasing energy in the form of light. The color of the light produced is determined by the gas used in the lamp. Common gases used in neon lamps include neon, argon, and krypton.
Neon lamps are very energy efficient and can last up to five years in most applications. They also have very low operating temperatures, making them good choices for applications where heat is a concern.
0913.1136 Application Field and Working Principle
The applications of incandescent and neon lamps are quite diverse. Incandescent lamps are widely used in residential and commercial settings to provide lighting for reading, cooking, working, and more. They are also used in many outdoor applications such as streetlights, security lighting, and landscape lighting. Neon lamps are used primarily for decorative purposes such as in signs, displays, and art pieces.
The working principle of both incandescent and neon lamps is the same. Electricity is passed through an electrically conductive material, typically a wire, creating heat. The heat generates light which is emitted from the lamp. In the case of incandescent lamps, the heat is generated by the resistance of the wire. In the case of neon lamps, the heat is generated by the collision of electrons with gas atoms.
Both incandescent and neon lamps have advantages and disadvantages. Incandescent lamps are inexpensive and easy to maintain, but they are not very energy efficient. Neon lamps are energy efficient and have low operating temperatures, but they are typically more expensive than incandescent lamps and may require specialized installation.
