However, when the electric field is applied, these electron–hole pairs will be accelerated towards the depleted region, and the avalanche breakdown current will be produced on their way. This current is known as the photogenerated avalanche current.

The signal output of an APD is determined by the avalanche breakdown current and the dark current. The avalanche current is the total current generated by the avalanche breakdown phenomenon; as it increases, the signal output also increases. The dark current is the current generated by thermal excitations in the absence of light, and it is the main source of noise in the system. Therefore, it is important to keep the dark current as low as possible in designing APDs with excellent performance.

Avalanche photodiodes are useful for optoelectronic systems due to their high sensitivity, wide dynamic range, low noise, and fast response time.
