The 09692009266 application field and working principle, commonly known as D-Sub connectors, are electrical connector pins and sockets used to transmit a variety of signals and power. The term ‘D-Sub’ is derived from the shape of the connector, which consists of two rows of pins or sockets arranged at right angles and encased in a single metal frame. This distinctive shape is reflected in their commonly-used nickname, “D-subs”.
D-Sub connectors are most commonly used in the production of personal computers, although they have become increasingly popular in recent years for a variety of other applications. This is largely due to their durability, high-reliability and their relatively low cost. They are, however, not as compact as other connectors and are not suitable for environments where space is at a premium, such as consumer electronics.
The basic functioning principle of D-Sub connectors is simple. When two D-Sub connectors are mated together, two metal contacts, known as ‘pins’ and ‘sockets’, come into contact. This forms a complete electrical circuit, allowing signals and power to be transmitted between the two connectors.
The pins are usually made of brass, while its sockets are typically made from nylon or some other insulating material, such as ceramic or resin. As such, when the pins and sockets are mated, the metal components are surrounded by these insulating materials, reducing the risk of short circuiting or electrocution.
D-Sub connectors are available in a variety of configurations, each designed for specific applications. Some of the most common include nine-pin (9-pin), fifteen-pin (15-pin) and twenty-five-pin (25-pin) connectors. The configuration of each type is determined by the number of pins contained within the metal frame. As such, 9-pin connectors have two rows of four pins each, while fifteen-pin connectors have three rows of five pins each and twenty-five-pin connectors have five rows of five pins each.
D-Sub connectors are typically used for data transfer and I/O (input-output) applications. They are for example used to transfer data between onboard computer hardware such as hard drives, CD-ROMs and DVD-ROMs. They are also used to connect peripheral devices such as printers, scanners and keyboards. Furthermore, many D-Sub connectors are now being used for higher-bandwidth applications such as Video Graphics Array (VGA), Digital Visual Interface (DVI) and Thunderbolt.
D-Sub connectors are highly reliable and, with the addition of strain relief fittings, extremely durable. This makes them ideal for applications where they will be expected to withstand some level of wear and tear, or where having a consistent signal is vital. Additionally, their large surface area helps reduce electrical noise and signal loss, ensuring good data transfer rates.
Due to their popularity and long-standing use in the personal computer market, D-Sub connectors are one of the most ubiquitous types of connector available. Furthermore, as their design has remained relatively unchanged over the years, many are compatible with different connections. This means that it is possible to, for instance, connect an old monitor using a new D-Sub connector or a newer computer using an old-style 15-pin D-Sub connector.
