Fuses are designed to protect electrical devices from overloads, short circuits, and other electrical faults. 0AGC010.VP application field and working principle focuses on a specific type of fuse, called a “Vacuum Protection (VP)” fuse, and outlines the different aspects of its operation. The VP type fuse is designed to provide superior protection against a wide range of fault conditions.
The VP fuse application field includes protection of critical industrial loads and systems, specifically at voltages between 450V - 1500V AC and 0-36V DC. It is used in a variety of industries for protecting sensitive power supply systems, whether they are industrial, commercial, or residential. Examples include protection for motors, pumps, transformers, and other mission-critical equipment. The VP is also used in telecommunications, transmission, distribution, and high-security applications.
Mersen, the manufacturer of the VP type fuse, has invested in a great deal of research and development to ensure optimal performance. The VP fuse utilizes a vacuum as the path of least resistance for the arc to pass through, protecting the atmosphere from the detrimental arc gas and loss of material that come from breaking of current paths. The VP fuse also has a built-in thermal disconnector that senses overload and upstream short-circuit, which allows it to monitor and control over temperatures and protect the motor from temperature related problems.
The working principle of the VP fuse is based on the combination of two theoretical concepts: “thermal dispersion” and “arc extinguishing.” Thermal dispersion refers to the ability of a device to transfer heat quickly away from the point of contact, which is done in the VP fuse by the vacuum. The heat transfer also occurs through the wired contacts, which both act as a heat transfer material and ensure a secure connection. Arc extinguishing refers to the ability of the matrix material in the VP fuse to interrupt the arc between the contacts, due to the material’s high vaporization pressure.
The VP fuse can automatically respond to overloads and upstream short-circuit faults, due to the design of its components. The thermal disconnector is one of these components and acts as a circuit breaker, by disconnecting the power supply when an overload or short-circuit is sensed. The thermal disconnector has two contacts, one of which is connected to a high-current lead and the other to a low-current lead. The low-current lead is also connected to the VP fuse body, allowing the thermal disconnector to trigger when temperatures exceed predetermined levels.
The VP fuse has many advantages over traditional fuses, most notably its superior protection against a wide range of faults and its temperature sensing capabilities. It is designed to provide optimal performance, regardless of the application. Also, its vacuum-arc extinguishing and hot disconnector components further reinforce its safety features, making it a reliable and trustworthy device for protecting critical loads and systems.
