Pushbutton switches have been in existence for quite some time. Historically, they have been used in military and industrial applications to activate, open or close a circuit, depending on the design of the switch. In modern times, push buttons are prevalent in consumer electronics, ranging from television remotes to computer keyboards. Though the application has evolved, the basic functionality remains the same. This article provides an overview of the general application fields, working principles and common types of pushbutton switches.
Application Fields
Nearly any application that requires an on/off switch or requires a way to input user choice is likely to include a push button. For example, these switches are found in consumer electronics, such as television sets, where users press buttons to control volume, channel, etc. Home security systems, gaming peripherals, hoist systems and appliances are just a few of the other applications for which these switches are designed. Pushbuttons can also be used in industrial and commercial applications, such as elevators, fire alarm systems, vending machines and garage door openers.
Working Principle
The working principle of pushbutton switches is relatively simple. When the button is pressed, the switch closes, which allows an electrical current to pass. Depending on the application, this may turn on a light, activate a motor or engage another type of device. Once the button is released, the switch opens, breaking the circuit and turning off the device or feature activated.
Common Types
Pushbutton switches come in two basic types: mechanical and electronic. Mechanical pushbuttons are composed of a physical element that is actuated by a user’s finger or hand. These elements often take the form of levers, plungers or keys, and can be sealed to make them waterproof. Electronic pushbuttons are concentric circles or squares that contain switches inside. These are activated simply by pressing down on the outer surface of the device.
Another type of switch that is commonly found in industrial, commercial and consumer applications is the push-pull switch. This type of switch is typically used in hoists and cranes to move objects. A push-pull switch is a combination of a push-button switch and a pull lever. By pushing or pulling the appropriate part of the controls, the motor or other device is turned off or on respectively.
Finally, there are emergency stop switches. These are pushbutton switches typically used in industrial applications, designed for emergency situations. The emergency stops are installed along the line in areas where personnel may be at risk. When the button is pressed, the switch cuts off power to the machinery, thus keeping people from harm.
Pushbutton switches provide a simple and effective way of controlling motors, lights, machines and more. Whether used in an industrial setting or to control a television remote, these switches remain a fundamental part of almost any device with an on/off switch. With such a wide array of application fields and working principles, no wonder pushbutton switches are so well known and utilized.
