Backplane Connectors - ARINC applications extend from broadband communications to avionics, and from automobile manufacturing to medical equipment. ARINC is an acronym for the Automatic Recognition and Information Control (ARINC) system developed by International Flight Instrument Corporation for the aircraft industry in the 1940s. It has since become the industry standard for communications and interoperability in air and ground systems. ARINC connectors are designed to provide reliable communications in rugged, high-speeed applications.

ARINC-spec connectors have at least one impedance-matched transmission line and can be single- or multitransmission lines. The transmission lines are typically a mixture of analog and digital signals and/or control and power lines. ARINC connectors are used in a wide range of applications, including aircraft, military ground systems, motor vehicles, and medical and industrial equipment.

The basic construction of an ARINC connector includes several elements. First, there is a solid upper housing which provides a structure to which the individual components can be attached. Second, there is a “finger” or contact assembly which makes contact with each of the individual signal lines. Third, there is a “backplane” which houses the actual contact assemblies, electrical lines, and the connecting wires. Finally, there is a metal shield that houses the connector and provides shielding from outside electrical and interference.

The typical connection of an ARINC connector consists of two parts: the contact assembly which is inserted into the backplane and the shield which is bolted into place. This provides the stability required for high-speed connections, as well as the electrical insulation necessary to protect from outside electrical interference. The contact assembly is made up of individual pins and wires that make contact with the signal lines. The shield provides a layer of insulation between the connection and the environment, which helps protect both from interference.

The working principle of an ARINC connector is based on the use of impedance matching. In order for data to be transmitted and received at high speeds, the impedance of the transmitting and receiving lines must remain consistent. This requires a certain degree of precision in both the design and connection of the connector. If the impedance of the transmission line does not match the impedance of the receiver line, data will be lost or degraded.

ARINC connectors are invaluable components in a wide range of mission-critical applications. Their design and construction ensure that they deliver reliable communications, even in the most rugged environments. The precise impedance matching that is necessary to maintain consistent communication is achieved through careful design and connectivity. ARINC connectors are a key component of any reliable broadband communications system.
