Working Principle of 1.5KE20A-B TVS Diodes
The main principle of the 1.5KE20A-B diode is the avalanche effect, where electrons gain energy and are accelerated into forward or reverse current. The avalanche process begins with a reverse bias voltage applied across the diode’s leads. When the voltage crosses a certain threshold, the electron field inside the diode is disturbed and the freed electrons accelerate into the anode. This creates a reverse current across the diode and a reverse voltage is generated. The current generated is limited by the threshold voltage.
When the current reaches the peak, the diode begins to dissipate the energy and its voltage rapidly decreases until the half-wave voltage is reached. The voltage at this point is called the clamping voltage, which the diode needs to be able to absorb the excessive energy. As long as there is a current in the circuit, the diode will remain in clamping mode. When the voltage rises above the clamping voltage, the diode can absorb the energy and dissipate it, allowing the circuit to be protected from overvoltage.
After the application of current, the reverse voltage across the diode causes some of the electrons in the anode to be attracted to the cathode and flow through it. This process is known as electrostatic discharge (ESD) and it helps to dissipate the excess energy from the circuit, while also preventing a large amount of current surge.
