The working principle of the SMCJ6053/TR13 TVS diode is based on a reverse biased PN junction. When a line-terminating voltage exceeds the standoff voltage of the device, the diode begins to turn on and forward current will begin to flow. This causes the transient voltage across the diode to increase, creating an avalanche breakdown in the junction. This process is known as self-commutating. As the voltage continues to rise, the current flows through the diode until it reaches the clamping voltage of the device. At this point, the voltage across the diode will be largely dissipated and the current will turn off, preventing further voltage rise.
