Tantalum capacitors are a type of electrolytic capacitors that contain a solid tantalum anode, a tantalum electrolyte and a liquid electrolyte. They are used to store electrical energy and have been around for many decades. They are also used in power supplies to reduce ripple, to provide for frequency or phase shifting, and to delay the actuation of mechanical or electronic relays.

Tantalum capacitors are also popularly used in various home appliances such as washing machines, and air-conditioning systems. Other application areas include avionic systems, military electronics, aircraft instruments and satellite navigation equipment.

Tantalum capacitors operate by storing electrostatic energy and they are often referred to as “tantalum electrolytic capacitors”. The working principle is that the tantalum layer of the capacitor is deposited on the anode to form a dielectric. This dielectric has a large surface area, making it possible for more electrons to be stored, resulting in a higher capacitance.

The electrodes are then dipped into an electrolyte bath, which is usually either an alkaline or acidic solution. The electrolyte provides a medium for the flow of electrons between the electrodes. When an electric charge is applied to the capacitor, electrons from the cathode move through the electrolyte and are attracted to the anode where they accumulate.

When the electric charge is removed, the electrons stored in the capacitor are dispersed into the electrolyte through an electric field. This in turn provides a current to the system or circuit, allowing it to function properly.

Tantalum capacitors are typically manufactured with a tolerance of +/- 5 to 20%, and their working temperature range is -55°C to +125°C. Other features include their low leakage current, low self-discharge rates, low equivalent series resistance (ESR), high capacitance in a small package size, and good temperature stability.
