Electrocardiogram (ECG) is a technique for monitoring the electrical activity of the heart, it has been of great value in diagnostics of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases, detection of arrhythmia and estimation of ventricular repolarization sequence. The ECG working principle can be explained by the concept of electrical forces. When the electrical force is generated by the electrodes attached to the body, it passes through the heart muscle and creates small electrical fields. These fields move through the heart and can be detected externally. Since the fields move through the body and each type of heart beats rhythmically, then a different shape is produced each time and this helps physicians to diagnose various heart conditions. Apart from its usage for diagnostics, electrocardiogram is also used for research purposes, such as studying the details of electrical conduction system in the heart and gathering information about the heart\'s functioning.
Today, modern ECGs use digital signal processing and sophisticated algorithms to detect any abnormalities in the heart signals. This enables more accurate diagnosis and reduces the possibility of misdiagnosis due to errors in reading the signals. In addition, these digital ECGs also provide clearer images which make interpretation easier for physicians. They also have a higher resolution which allows the physician to see small details in the signal.
