Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has become one of the most widely used medical imaging modalities in the clinical setting. MRI is based on the principles of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), which was first discovered in 1946. Since then, MRI has become an essential part of clinical practice, enabling physicians to visualize and assess the structures, functions, and pathology of organs and tissues in the body. In this article, we will discuss the application fields and working principles of MRI.
The primary application fields of MRI include diagnostics, research, and surgery. Diagnostic MRI is commonly used to diagnose a wide variety of medical conditions such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, neurological disorders, musculoskeletal diseases, and many other pathologies. Research MRI is used in various clinical and preclinical research studies to elucidate underlying biological processes, to track the progression of disease and to monitor responses to different treatments. With the development of advanced MRI techniques, MRI has also become an important tool in surgical planning, guiding minimally invasive interventions, and interventional radiology.
The working principle of MRI is based on the principles of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). NMR is a spectroscopic technique that relies on the magnetic properties of certain atomic nuclei. When exposed to a strong external magnetic field, the nuclei of certain atoms all align in the same direction and absorb electromagnetic radiation of a specific frequency, known as the resonance frequency. By applying a time-varying magnetic field, it is possible to cause the nuclei to absorb and emit radiation in a pattern that can be detected by the MRI scanner.
The MRI sequence consists of two main stages: the radiofrequency (RF) pulse and the data acquisition. First, an RF pulse of a short duration is applied to the patient, which causes a change in the alignment of the spins. This causes a signal to be emitted that is detected by the MRI scanner. After the RF pulse, the data acquisition phase is initiated, during which the data from the signal emitted is collected and processed.
The MRI signal can then be used to construct an image of the anatomy being studied. The image is constructed by using a variety of processing techniques, such as signal averaging and digital filtering. This allows for the detection of miniscule details from within the body, which can be used to reveal pathological localization and pathology that may not be evident by visual inspection alone.
MRI has become an increasingly important imaging modality in the field of medicine due to its non-invasive nature, its ability to image multiple organs and tissues in the body simultaneously, and its high sensitivity and specificity. With the development of new advanced MRI techniques, the capability of MRI to visualize and assess the various aspects of a disease, from anatomical structure to pathological loci and functions, is growing, making it a powerful clinical tool.
