Electrostatic precipitators (ESPs) are advanced pollution control devices designed to remove and collect airborne particulate matter (PM) from gas streams, such as smoke from combustion processes. Representing a major technological breakthrough, ESPs have been used in many industries for more than a century for the efficient and economic removal of various pollutants from exhaust gases. ESPs are typically composed of an electrical field generator and a collection plate. In applications involving machinery with high dust levels, such as coal-fired power plants and hazardous material incinerators, ESPs are commonly employed as the primary particle removal systems. In a typical ESP, a stream of particles is exposed to high voltage corona discharge, generating a powerful electric field. The oppositely charged pristine particles are then drawn to a charged metal collector plate due to electrOPHoresis. Finally, the particles are then trapped and collected by the plate and gravitation, with the dust-laden air then vented to the atmosphere. In order to maximize the efficiency of an ESP, the gas stream must be properly prepared before entering the ESP. A dust preseparator is often used to Take away large particles prior to introduction to the ESP. This preseparator could be either in the form of a wet scrubber or a high-efficiency cyclone separator.Advantages of the ESP include its high efficiency, high reliability, and long life span. Generally, ESPs are capable of achieving dust collection efficiencies in the range of 99.9% at a residence time of 2-10 seconds. This high particulate removal efficiency is due to the fact that ESPs are able to capture particles of all sizes and shapes, including those that are difficult to collect with other particulate removal devices, such as mechanical filters and cyclones. As well, ESPs are rugged and can withstand harsh industrial conditions. With proper maintenance, the ESPs can be expected to last for many years of effective operation. On the other hand, drawbacks of the ESPs include the requirement for large and expensive collectors, the need for periodic maintenance, and the presence of ozone generated from the high voltage corona discharge. With large and expensive collectors, mounting a proper ESP system can be cost prohibitive. As well, periodical maintenance is needed in order to maintain optimal ESP performance. Although electric field-induced ozone can increase the oxidation efficiency of particulates, it can also cause harm to workers and the local environment.In conclusion, ESPs are advanced and reliable devices for the efficient removal of airborne particles from exhaust gases. With proper designing, installation, and maintenance, these devices can provide reliable and efficient particulate removal solutions. Although having its own drawbacks, the ESP is still considered as the most suitable choice for highly dust laden exhaust gases in industries.
