PTC Resettable Fuses

PTC resettable fuses are self-resetting fuses that contain a Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) thermistor element. When the current passing through the fuse exceeds its tripping current threshold, the PTC thermistor heats up. This change in temperature alters its resistance, thus actively limiting current flow. The current limiting feature of these fuses does not damage the circuit, as opposed to the traditional, one-time use, fuses.

The 1206L175PR resettable fuse is designed specifically to protect small electronic devices with low power requirements (ex. USB ports). It features ultra-low profile dimensions (1.6 mm x 1.2 mm) and a high voltage of 175V. The device has a response time of 200 μs and utilizes a Hybrid Trigger Metrolock Technology™ to quickly detect and respond to current changes.The 1206L175PR can be classified as a PC board mount PTC resettable fuse. It has an integrated design that allows for direct mounting onto printed circuit boards. The fuse also offers a low tripping current threshold of 0.212A and a maximum operating temperature of 125°C.The working principle of the 1206L175PR is similar to traditional fuses. This resettable fuse is equipped with a polymeric Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) thermistor element. When the current passing through the fuse exceeds its tripping current threshold, the PTC thermistor heats up. This change in temperature alters its resistance, thus actively limiting current flow. By limiting current flow, the device reduces the risk of damage to the circuit and is able to reset itself after the fault current has dissipated.
