Tantalum Capacitors
Tantalum capacitors, sometimes referred to as “solid” capacitors, are a type of electrolytic capacitors made from a thin film of tantalum material sandwiched between two conducting plates. Due to its unique physical characteristics, the tantalum capacitor is well-suited for a variety of applications. It is widely used in consumer electronics, medical devices, automotive electronics and energy storage applications. Tantalum capacitors are beneficial in that they offer a higher energy density than other capacitor types, making them ideal for applications where space is limited.
13008-003MESB/HR Application Field and Working Principle
The 13008-003MESB/HR is a through-hole tantalum capacitor ideal for a variety of applications in both high power and low power configurations. The capacitor features a dielectric of porous tantalum anode material and an oxygen free copper cathode with a high-temperature epoxy sealant. The capacitor exhibits a low ESR and a wide operating temperature range.
The 13008-003MESB/HR capacitor works through the electrostatic storage of charges. When a voltage is applied across the capacitor plates, a charge is built up on the capacitance plates, creating an electric field. This electric field stores energy that Counteracts the applied voltage, creating a potential difference between the two plates and, thus, preventing further electric current from passing between them. This is a process known as capacitance.
The stored energy is determined by the size and number of the capacitance plates, the applied voltage, and the dielectric material used. Tantalum capacitors are able to provide higher capacitance for a given size due to their unique properties. The tantalum material has a very stable dielectric constant and a high melting point, making it a desirable choice for capacitor components. The oxygen free copper cathode material used for the 13008-003MESB/HR capacitor also helps to improve the overall capacitance.
