Tantalum Capacitors
Tantalum capacitors have the ability to maintain very high capacitance within a relatively small surface area, making them great for applications in which size and weight are critical factors. The 13008-012KESC (KESC) capacitor is a particularly versatile type of tantalum capacitor. Applications of this capacitor include audio processing, DC-DC converters, high frequency circuits, and more.
The KESC is a molded, solid-electrolytic, tantalum capacitor in a 12mm x 8mm case. The KESC specifications include low ESR ratings (7.1m ohm @ 25C) and excellent high-frequency performance (1.2GHz @ -3dB). The KESC is also resistant to high temperatures up to 205C, making it ideal for use in high temperature environments such as aerospace and automotive use. Additionally, the KESC has high vibration capabilities of up to 250Hz.
The internal construction of the KESC capacitor is responsible for its high performance. Within the case is a solid, cylindrical section of highly conductive aluminum oxide, also known as a dielectric. A tantalum pellet is then added to the center of the dielectric, forming the anode of the capacitor. The anode is then connected to the positive end of the capacitor, and the case itself acts as the negative electrode. The case is then filled with an electrolyte solution, such as sulfuric acid, to form the complete capacitor.
In terms of working principles, the KESC capacitor functions the same as any other capacitor. In the presence of an electric field, the capacitor stores free electrons within its dielectric in a process known as dielectric charging. This results in an increase in the voltages stored between the two ends of the capacitor, forming an electric field. When a small current is applied, this electric field is neutralized, allowing a current to flow through the capacitor.
The KESC capacitor provides a range of benefits for many different areas, such as aerospace and automotive applications. The high temperature tolerance and low ESR ratings make the KESC capacitor suitable for many different applications. In addition, the high-frequency performance and vibrational capabilities make this type of capacitor a great choice for an application with high-speed requirements.
