Tantalum Capacitors

The 13008-041MESB is an example of a tantalum capacitor. These specialized capacitors are used for a variety of tasks in the electronics world, from providing power to voltage regulation. The 13008-041MESB is a discrete component, so it is typically used in applications that require a relatively small amount of capacitance.

Application Field

Tantalum capacitors are used in both analog and digital circuits for low voltage power supply bypass, decoupling, blurring as well as filtering. The 13008-041MESB can also be used as a voltage reference for linear and switched mode power supplies, AC motor control circuits, and as timing capacitors in oscillator circuits. In addition, it can be used for low current triggering or protection circuitry.

Working Principle

Tantalum capacitors work through the same basic principle as a regular capacitor. Like any other capacitor, the 13008-041MESB is composed of two electrical plates separated by a dielectric material. When a voltage is applied to the plates, an electric field is generated across the capacitor that stores energy and is able to discharge a current to an electronic component when required. However, unlike regular capacitors, the electrical plates on the 13008-041MESB are formed from sintered tantalum powder in order to increase the capacitance of the capacitor.

In addition, the dielectric material inside the 13008-041MESB is also different than that of a standard capacitor. Instead of using a non-conductive material, such as plastic, tantalum capacitors use a semi-conductive dielectric material known as manganese dioxide. This material has a higher dielectric constant than plastics and as a result, the 13008-041MESB can store much more energy for the same size as a traditional capacitor.
