A ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) is a device used in electrical wiring to disconnect a circuit when unbalanced current is detected between an energized conductor and a neutral conductor. This imbalance may be caused by a fault in either the grounding system or the wiring of the circuit, or an unintentional contact with the energized live conductor. The GFCI monitors the relationship between the live conductor and the neutral conductor and will disconnect the power to the circuit if the current imbalance exceeds approximately 5mA.

This protects persons from coming into contact with an energized conductor. When a person touches the energized conductor, their body becomes the path to ground, and the GFCI trips, disconnecting the circuit.

In addition to the basic overcurrent protection, some GFCIs are equipped with additional safety features. These may include a ground-fault detection circuit, which will sense ground faults in the wiring downstream of the GFCI; a delayed reset feature, which allows the user to push the reset button before the power is reconnected; a lockout feature, which locks out the unit after a certain number of trips; and a noise filter, which helps reduce false trips caused by electromagnetic interference or switching transients.

GFCIs are increasingly seen as an essential safety device in residential and commercial applications, and their use is becoming more widespread as their cost and size continue to decrease. GFCIs are now widely available in consumer electronics stores, electrical supply stores, and online retailers.
