Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI)

Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs) are relatively new pieces of technology used in electrical systems, and primarily designed to protect people from electrical shock and fire hazards. They work by quickly shutting off the power when there is an unbalanced electrical current between the hot and neutral wires, either inside the device or in the connection to the main electrical panel. Although they are used mostly in residential and commercial settings, GFCIs can also be used in industrial and hazardous locations. The purpose of a GFCI is to quickly detect any imbalance in electrical current, which can indicate a faulty appliance, or even a person coming into contact with an exposed piece of live wiring. When this happens, the GFCI device trips, which immediately shuts off power to the circuit, protecting the person or object from electrical shock. In order to understand the working principle of a GFCI, it is important to understand how current flows. A circuit is created when a continuous loop of electrical power is made from a source to an appliance and back again. This is known as a closed circuit. When the path of current is broken by a person coming into contact with exposed wiring, the gap in the circuit indicates an open circuit. An open circuit creates an unbalanced electrical current, as there is now no path for the electrical current to return. The current that is trapped between the two hot wires will find another route to the ground (in other words, a short circuit), which can create an electric shock hazard for a person who may be standing in the area. A GFCI is designed to detect even the slightest imbalance in the electrical current, which most, if not all traditional circuit breakers, cannot do. When the device detects a disruption in the flow of current along a single path, it trips the circuit breaker, and shuts off power to the electrical circuit almost instantaneously. GFCI devices are typically used in wet or wet/dry locations, such as bathrooms, kitchens, garages and outdoor areas, where there is a greater risk of electric shock due to the presence of water. They are also used in commercial and industrial applications, such as factories and construction sites. Unlike traditional circuit breakers, GFCI devices have two independent wiring paths. On one path, a reference voltage (also known as a ‘source-reference’) is sent out to compare the incoming current with. On the other path, the GFCI monitors the return current. If a difference greater than a specific amount is detected, the device will trip, thus cutting off the power supply. GFCIs are also designed to detect surge currents. When a large surge of current enters a circuit, these devices will act as a protective measure to reduce the amount of current entering into the system. This helps protect the circuitry, as well as preventing accidents and minimizing the chances of electrical fire. Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters are essential pieces of safety equipment for any domestic or commercial property using an electrical system. They are small devices that are relatively inexpensive, yet it can save lives and property from a potential electrical shock hazard. It’s also important to remember that traditional circuit breakers, although an important aspect of any electrical system, are not designed to detect the slightest imbalance in the electrical current. This is why GFCI’s are an integral part of any residential or commercial property. GFCI devices can also be tested on a regular basis to ensure that they are working properly. Most GFCIs have a special ‘test’ button to quickly check that they are functioning correctly. Regular testing of these devices not only keeps your family and property safe from electrical shock and fire hazards, but can help reduce associated repair costs in the long run. Overall, Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters are an invaluable piece of safety equipment which provide protection against electrical shock and fire hazards. They help regulate the power in all types of electrical systems, are relatively inexpensive and an important safety feature of any residential or commercial property. Regular testing of GFCI devices is highly recommended, to help ensure that they are functioning correctly and safely at all times.
