Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI)
A ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) is a device designed to protect people from electrical shock hazards. It is a type of circuit breaker used to automatically interrupt electric current to an electrical circuit when it detects an imbalance between the line current leaving and returning to the circuit. GFCI\'s are designed to protect people from electric shock due to ground faults, or a short circuit between a hot wire and a ground wire.
A ground fault is an unintentional connection between a hot wire and a grounded element, such as a bare metal case or conduit, which forms a direct connection between the hot wire and a person touching the case or conduit. If the hot wire were "hot," then a direct current would flow through the person, causing an electric shock. GFCIs use a specially designed sensing circuit to detect such currents and quickly interrupt power to the circuit. In standard practice, a GFCI will sense an imbalance as low as 6 to 30 milliamps within seconds and react immediately, interrupting power before any harm can come to the person touching the ground.
GFCI\'s are designed to offer instant protection against electrical shock hazards when used properly. They are most commonly used for protection in wet or damp areas, such as kitchens, bathrooms, outdoor areas, garages, and workshops. Typically, GFCIs are installed on all outlets in kitchens, wet or damp locations, and in any area where water is likely to be present. They are also often required for outlets connected to swimming pools, hot tubs, or spas.
In addition to providing protection against electrical shock, GFCI\'s also help to protect electrical equipment and appliances from damage due to ground faults and power surges. By quickly cutting off the power, GFCI\'s can prevent costly damage to appliances and other electronics. This protection can be especially valuable in areas that are subject to frequent power surges or other power disturbances.
GFCI\'s work by constantly monitoring electrical currents in the circuit. If the current being drawn from the hot wire is not in balance with the neutral wire, the GFCI will detect this imbalance and shut off the power to the circuit in order to protect against electrical shock hazards. GFCIs are designed to be relatively sensitive and are able to sense an imbalance of as little as 6 to 30 milliamps and shut off the power to the circuit in less than a second.
GFCI\'s also have an additional feature that can help protect people from electrocution, known as the "Trip Test". This feature allows for periodic testing of the GFCI\'s function. If the GFCI fails to sense an imbalance, it will remain active. If it is functioning properly, the Trip Test feature will trip the GFCI and will cause it to shut off the power to the circuit. This can help to ensure that the GFCI is working properly and can offer protection against electrical shock hazards.
GFCI\'s are designed to provide secure and highly reliable protection against electrical shock hazards. When used properly, they can be a powerful tool for protecting people from the dangers of electrical shock. GFCI\'s are an essential component of any electrical system and should be inspected and tested regularly to ensure that they are working properly and offering maximum protection.
