Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter or GFCI provides additional protection against fault current by constantly monitoring the flow of electricity through the circuit and deactivating the circuit when the flow becomes irregular. A GFCI monitors current on both the hot and neutral phases of the circuit. If the GFCI senses an imbalance in current on either side of the circuit, it will trip the circuit, thus preventing someone from coming in contact with a hazardous situation.GFCIs are designed to protect anyone who may come into contact with electricity, and in particular, to protect against the possibility of electrocution, or death via electric shock. They also protect against injury and property damage due to electric shock and fire. A GFCI can be considered as a special type of circuit breaker which is more sensitive to electrical faults than a traditional circuit breaker. Most residential electrical codes now require the use of GFCI in all areas which are prone to moisture (bathroom, kitchen, garage, etc.), due to the increased protection they provide. Commercial and industrial locations may also have commercial grade GFIs installed, depending on the type of industry.The working principle of a GFCI is sound and is based on the principle of differential current monitoring. The GFCI is essentially a very sensitive current detector that monitors the current on the hot and neutral wires of the circuit. If the currents on each side of the circuit deviate from each other by more than 5 milliamps (1/1000th of an amp), then it is considered a dangerous condition. This means that the current on the hot wire has gone to other places that are not normal, such as through a person.It works by analyzing the difference between incoming current on the hot and neutral sides of a circuit. If there is an imbalance of more than 5 mA (milliamps) between the neutral and hot side of the circuit, then the GFCI will trip, cutting off the power and preventing a potential shock hazard. A common trip point is 6 mA. When a GFCI detects a ground fault, it immediately deactivates the circuit by opening the breaker contacts that control the incoming power to the circuit. It is important to remember that the GFCI should not be used to replace a fuse to protect the circuit from overloads or short circuits. GFCIs are commonly used in residential kitchens, bathrooms, and outdoors; in commercial locations such as hospitals, schools, office buildings, and warehouses; and in industrial processes such as welding, production line, and laboratories.When used properly, GFCIs can provide much needed overload and shock protection for individuals and businesses. They are a proven safety device and one of the most important types of Circuit Breakers currently in use.
