.Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) is a safety device which is designed to continuously monitor the current flow in an electrical circuit to detect any prolonged disturbances or drops in the current. It is then configured to trip, or shut down, the circuit in the event a ground fault, or imbalance between the current flowing out of the circuit and the current returning to the circuit, is detected. It prevents further flow of destructive electric currents through the earth. A GFCI works by comparing the current level flowing between the hot conductor and the neutral conductor, for instance, with an electrical appliance.
The application of GFCI is primarily in areas with high potential of electrical injuries by tripping the circuit and providing a safe shutdown. These areas include bathrooms, basements, and garages, as well as construction sites and wet areas, where most of the electrical appliances are frequently used and wetness poses a potential threat. In some places, it is legally and practically required for the installation of these devices so that it will be easy to detect any electrical fault that could have caused electric shock.
The working principle of GFCI is based on the electrical concept of current. When a porous conductor or a device is directly or inductively connected to the current flow path of a circuit, the current of the circuit goes into the ground path, and the potential difference between the in-phase and the out-of-phase currents increases. The increase in the potential difference between the in-phase and out-of-phase currents causes the circuit to be opened through the GFCI as a safety measure. Majorly, GFCI monitors the imbalance in the electrical current and presents it in three stages. The first stage is the isolation or detection of an imbalance in the current, the second stage is the quenching of the current, and the third is insulation or disconnection.
GFCIs also have a reset button which allows the user to avoid an infinite loop if the circuit is fully functional. This reset button is designed to allow the user to reset the GFCI for further use of the circuit. Although GFCI is quite expensive, it is designed to provide a longer life than other safety switches or supplies and provides secure shut down of circuits in the event of an electrical fault. Also, it is designed to be near the electrical equipment, which further enhances its safety features.
Other than providing safety to humans from electrical shocks, GFCIs are also used in industrial applications. They are used in hazardous locations to reduce the occurrence of short-circuits and other kinds of electrical faults. In addition, GFCIs are also used in production lines and automation processes for fault detection and avoidance.
Despite the high cost, installation and maintenance of GFCI, its use is encouraged in practical applications and environments where electric shock can occur. The safety and reliability of GFCI makes it an indispensable tool in both domestic and industrial settings, to reduce any major accidents that could occur due to abnormal electric currents.
