Fixed Inductors are used to store energy in the form of magnetic fields. These inductors can be used in a variety of applications, such as for radio frequency (RF) filters, power circuits, motor control, amplifiers and oscillator circuits. The inductors are typically constructed by winding a coil of wire on a core. Popular core materials are ferrite magnets, powdered iron cores, and ceramic cores.The 1331-274J fixed inductor is designed to be used in an 8-pin SOIC (“small outline integrated circuit”) package and performs the same function as other inductors on the market. It is rated at 1.2 µH (1.2 microhenry) and is designed for use in switched-mode power supplies’ voltage regulator circuits.The working principle of a fixed inductor is based on Faraday’s Law of Electromagnetic Induction. When a conductor is moved in a magnetic field, an electromotive force (EMF) is induced in the coil. This phenomenon is known as mutual inductance and it is used to generate voltage or current in an inductor.There are two types of fixed inductors that are found in electronic circuits, wound inductors and air core inductors. Wound inductors are made up of a coil of insulated wire wrapped around an iron or magnetic core. The core material creates a magnetic field in the center of the coil, which increases the inductance of the circuit and provides most of the storing energy. Air core inductors do not contain a core material, they only consist of a coil of wire.
