Tantalum Capacitors

Tantalum capacitors are a type of electrolytic capacitor. They are similar to aluminum electrolytic capacitors in terms of construction, but their wet electrolyte is made from a type of semiconductor material, tantalum dioxide, which has a higher dielectric constant than aluminum oxide paste. As a result, they have higher capacitance and higher voltage ratings.

The anode surface of the capacitor is immersed in a liquid electrolyte containing dissolved ions and an electric current is applied between the two electrodes. The anode electrodes attract and trap the positively charged ions in the liquid electrolyte which form a conducting layer to produce positive charges on the anode. The cathode attracts and traps the negative ions in the liquid electrolyte which form a conducting layer to produce negative charges on the cathode.

When the capacitor is connected to a power source, a voltage is applied across its electrodes. This causes a flow of electrons from the cathode to the anode, and the negative charges build up on the cathode while the positive charges build up on the anode. The resulting electric field across the dielectric layer creates a potential energy that is stored in the form of an electric charge. When the capacitor is disconnected from the power source, the voltage across the electrodes is minimized and the stored energy is released.
