Tantalum capacitors, a type of electrolytic capacitor, which is typically composed of a coating of tantalum powder on the surface of an Anton inhibitor material and held in place with a solid electrolyte, are used widely in many types of electronics. The 150D187X0006R2BE3 is a surface mount type of electrolytic capacitor with its rated voltage of 6.3V and a capacitance of 18µF.

The working principle of a tantalum capacitor is based on electrochemical principles. A thin layer of tantalum oxide is produced on the surface of an anode or conductive element, and a solid electrolyte is then bonded to the oxide layer. When a potential exists between the anode and the cathode, dissociated ions in the electrolyte flow towards and/or are deposited on the anode surface.

The dissipated ions form a thin, stable film of negative charges between the oxide layer and the electrolyte and the resulting capacitance is proportional to the area of the anode and inversely proportional to the thickness of the dielectric layer. When the capacitor is discharged, the ionic current, or capacitive current, reverses the current polarity, and the charge dissipates, resulting in the removal of ions.
