Fixed Inductors
Inductors are used to store energy, stabilize voltage and reduce electrical noise in electrical and electronic circuits. Fixed inductors (sometimes referred to as chokes) are designed to operate at a specific frequency and provide a constant inductance over a specific range of currents and voltages. The 155H type fixed inductor is suited for high current applications and may be used to filter out high frequency noise, provide additional filtering in RF circuits, act as tuned inductors, or provide additional current limiting protection. This article will take an in depth look at the 155H application field and working principle.
155H Application Field
The 155H series of fixed inductors have been specifically designed for use in DC-DC converters, mobile phone chargers, and low noise switching power supplies. They are also capable of being used in wide range of other circuits, including those dealing with:
- Regulated inverters and power regulators
- Synchronous rectifiers
- Synchronous buck regulator
- Isolation mill to generate DC power
- Bluetooth or 802.11 b/g/n applications
- FPGA and DSP circuits
- Power line filters for LCD TV, HDTV, and plasma displays
- RF circuits such as amplifiers, oscillators, and noise filters
The 155H series of fixed inductors feature a highly efficient magnetics solution, boasting a 6.1 high current capability and a high saturation current rating of 320 Amps. The inductance range is 0.3mH to 0.68mH, while the resistance range is from 5.9 mOhms to 11.2 mOhms. This combination of features makes the 155H series of fixed inductors suitable for a variety of different applications.
Working Principle
Fixed inductors operate by the principle of inductance, which is the ability of a conductor to oppose a change in current. An inductor consists of a coil of wire and a core (or cores) made from a material with high electrical conductivity. When an electric current passes through the wire, a magnetic field is set up around it, resulting in an electromagnetic field. This field serves to oppose any changes in the current, thereby stabilizing it.
The 155H series of fixed inductors uses two or three ferrite cores to increase its inductance. The cores are encapsulated in a resin that makes them impervious to environmental forces. The cores are further wound with high conductivity wire to increase the inductance range of the device. As current is applied to the device, the mI/R (magnitude of current/resistance) ratio increases, thereby increasing the inductance of the device.
The 155H also provides additional protection by using a shorted turn feature. This allows the inductor to maintain a low PAR (power application requirement) even under high current loads. This feature helps to prevent damage to sensitive components in the circuit.
Conclusion
The 155H fixed inductor is well-suited for a variety of applications due to its high current capability and low PAR rating. The shorted turn feature further helps to protect sensitive components, while the encapsulated cores provide added reliability in harsh environments. The combination of features makes the 155H series of fixed inductors ideal for use in DC-DC converters, mobile phone chargers, synchronous rectifiers, and isolation mills.
