Working Principle
Film capacitors are produced by winding two strips of foil which are separated by a plastic film. The foils are made from either aluminium or copper, which are coated with a thin layer of metal oxide to act as a dielectric. This means that an electrical current cannot pass through the capacitor and charge will accumulate on either side of the dielectric.
When an AC (alternating current) voltage is applied across the capacitor, the current will pass through the dielectric rapidly. This results in an electrical current that switches on and off, creating an electromagnetic field which is known as the capacitive reactance.
When the current is switched off, the electric field dissipates and creates a magnetic field around the capacitor. This magnetism causes a current which is the result of the AC voltage.
In DC voltage applications, the electricity is allowed to accumulate on both sides of the dielectric, creating the charge which can be used to power circuits. It is for this reason that DC voltage is referred to as “static electricity” as it does not cause any current.
